Marc deMontigny

Designer, Artist, Fabricator, Craftsman

Land & Water Studio is the result of a life's worth of passion for nature, woodwork and creativity by artist Marc deMontigny.

Land & Water Studio is a creative studio located on Vancouver Island specializing in live edge custom furniture and 3D wood map artworks.

Marc deMontigny is the artist behind Land & Water Studio. Marc is a longtime woodworker with specialties in digital modelling, fabrication and sustainable design.

He loves using modern tools like computers and robotics together with traditional tools like hand files and hand planes. Every piece he makes takes a combination of old and new to bring it into existence. Marc is a strong advocate for sustainable design; his commitment is to responsibly source wood from BC, give salvaged wood a new life wherever possible and use non-toxic materials.

When he’s not creating beautiful custom furniture and maps, Marc is running the workshop at Toolpath Design, a full-service shop offering custom design, millwork and CNC manufacturing in downtown Victoria BC.

"It’s a privilege to work with my clients on custom legacy pieces that reflect these special connections they feel to the places they love."

Artist Statement

I’ve always had a love for the intricacies of maps and the patience needed in woodworking. As a child, my bedside light was a large globe of the earth. When the light was on, the 3D bathymetry of the world’s ocean floors popped out. I fell asleep countless nights exploring that globe, studying place names and imagining the landscapes out there in the world.

As humans, we have deep connections to the lands, waters and mountains we know and love. These landscapes have been stewarded and shaped by Indigenous peoples long before people like me have called them home.

It’s a humbling feeling to look out over a landscape and feel how small we really are. How the clouds form and the water falls, where the forests rise and the prairies open up—this feeling is called the Overview Effect. These views help us remember the deep interconnections in our natural surroundings, and the ways we are part of our natural world.
